How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Get it right the first time — so your new Bolek ring fits perfectly from day one.

A wrong size is the most common reason rings get exchanged anywhere in the world. At Bolek, every ring is hand-set in our women-run atelier in Istanbul, in solid 14K gold. Because the stones are hand-wrapped, it pays to get the size right straight away: nothing needs resizing and you can wear your ring every day from the start. In just a few minutes you can measure your size accurately at home.

How European sizing works

Bolek uses European sizing (ISO 8653). The number is simply the inner circumference of the ring in millimetres. So size 54 means a 54 mm inner circumference. The handy upshot: measure your finger's circumference in millimetres and you have your size right away. We stock sizes 50 to 60.

Method 1 — Measure a ring you already own

1.   Choose a ring that fits well on the finger you're ordering for.

2.   Lay the ring flat and measure the inner diameter (edge to edge, on the inside) in millimetres.

3.   Find that diameter in the table below and read off your size.

Tip: measure two or three times and take the average to be sure.

Method 2 — The string or paper method

1.   Cut a thin strip of paper, or take a piece of string or thread.

2.   Wrap it snugly — but not tightly — around the base of your finger.

3.   Mark where the end overlaps the strip.

4.   Measure the length up to the mark in millimetres. That is your inner circumference and your size.

Tip: check that the strip also passes over your knuckle — the ring has to slide past it.

Method 3 — Print a ring sizer

Many brands offer a printable ring sizer. Always print it at 100% (do not set the print dialog to “fit to page”), then place an existing ring over the circles or use the cut-out strip. Hold a ruler against it to confirm the scale is correct before you measure.

6 tips for the most accurate measurement

•     Measure at the end of the day. Fingers are thinner in the morning and in the cold, and swell slightly later on.

•     Avoid temperature extremes. Cold hands give you too small a size, warm hands too large.

•     Account for your knuckle. If your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, measure both and choose something in between so the ring slides over smoothly.

•     Mind the band width. Wide bands sit tighter; for a wide ring you may want to go up one size.

•     Between two sizes? Round up. A fraction looser is more comfortable than too tight.

•     Measure the right hand. Your dominant hand is often a fraction larger than the other.
